APA in text citation multiple authors examples

In-text citations for multiple authors in the American Psychological Association (APA) style follow a specific format. If there are two authors, list both names in the citation, separated by an “&” (e.g. (Smith & Jones, 2020)). If there are three or more authors, list the first author followed by “et al.” (e.g. (Smith et al., 2020)). The year of publication should always be included.

For example:

Two authors: According to Smith and Jones (2020), …
Three or more authors: According to Smith et al. (2020), …

APA in-text citation of multiple authors from different years

According to Smith (2020) and Jones (2021), the use of technology in the classroom has increased significantly in recent years.

Research has shown that physical activity can improve cognitive function (Doe, 2020; Smith, 2019; Johnson, 2018).

A study by Williams (2022), Davis (2021), and Smith (2020) found that students who use technology for educational purposes have better academic outcomes.

In a recent article, Johnson (2022), Smith (2021), and Taylor (2020) discussed the importance of parental involvement in a child’s education.

According to a survey conducted by Jones (2022), Smith (2021), and Anderson (2020), the majority of teachers believe that technology can enhance learning.

Note: When you are citing multiple sources in the same sentence and they have different publication years, list the authors’ last names and years of publication in the order in which they appear in the sentence. In the reference list, list the sources in alphabetical order by the first author’s last name.
