Definition of Management by Different Authors

Management is the process of planning and organizing a business resource and activities to achieve the goals of an organization. It is a process that achieves the goals of an organization through planning, organizing, staffing, leadership, control.

The Father of the principles of management is Henry Fayol. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey. He later moved to France with his family. He introduced five functions of management and 14 basic principles. Henry Fayle wrote a book on administrative management, industry, and general management in 1916, which was published in the United States in 1949 and later greatly inspired other writers.

The father of scientific management is Frederick Winslow Taylor. He was born in 1856 in Philadelphia, USA. He was an American mechanical engineer who worked all his life to improve his skills in industrial production. Taylor worked in various organizations as a consulting engineer until 1900. He retired from the service in 1901 at the age of 45 and devoted the rest of his life to the development of various concepts of management, including the development of scientific management theory.

According to Henri Fayol, “To manage is to forecast and to plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control.”

Frederick Winslow Taylor states, “Management is the art of knowing what you want to do and then seeing that they do it in the best and the cheapest way.”

Harold Koontz defines, “Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups.”

George R Terry defines management as, “A process consisting of planning organizing, actuating and controlling, performed to determine and accomplish the objectives by the use of people and resources.”

According to Peter Ferdinand Drucker, “Management is a multipurpose organ that manages a business and manages managers and manages workers and work.”

According to James A.F. Stoner. “Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the efforts of organization members and of using all other organizational resources to achieve stated organizational goals.”

George R Terry defines, “Management Is a distinct process consisting of planning, organizing, actuating and controlling; utilizing in each both science and art, and followed in order to accomplish pre-determined objectives.”

Definition of Management by Different Authors:

Mary Parker Follett quoted management as, ” “getting things done by other people.”

According to Clough, Donald J. “Management is the art and science of decision-making and leadership.”

According to Theo Haimann and William Scott, “Management is a social and technical process which utilizes, resources, influences, human action and facilitates changes in order to accomplish organizational goals.”

Kathryn M. Bartol and David C. Martin defined, “Management is the process of achieving the organizational goal by engaging in the major functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling.”

S. George defines, “Management consists of getting things done through others. Manager is one who accomplishes the objectives by directing the efforts of others.”

According to Donald J. Cough, “Management is the art and science of decision making and leadership.”

Peterson and Plowman defined, “Management may be defined as the process by means of which the purpose and objectives of a particular human group are determined, clarified and effectuated.”
