Below the salt হচ্ছে সাধারণ বা নিম্নমানের, নিচু/সামাজিক অবস্থান কম। মধ্যযুগে লবনের দাম বেশি ছিলো। তখনকার সময় খাবারের টেবিলের মাঝখানে লবন স্থাপন করা হত এবং উঁচু পরিবার বা অতিথি above the salt এবং চাকররা বা নিচু স্থানের মানুষেরা below the salt বসে ছিলেন। এজন্য below the salt কে বলা হয় নিচু প্রকৃতির/নিম্নমানের।
